Uniform Crime Reporting Program
NRS 179A.078
provides for the Public Safety Director to establish a uniform program for
reporting crime. The purpose of the state Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program
is to systematically collect and provide statistical information related to
crime. The information can be used by a wide variety
of sources, both public and private. The crime data is submitted through the
state UCR Program to the national UCR Program, which is administered by the
FBI.
The program's focus is to
provide a better understanding of crime in Nevada which will, in turn, assist
criminal justice administrators, practitioners, and academics to plan, budget,
and provide services to the public. Participation by numerous criminal justice
agencies in the state program is necessary to remain in compliance with both the FBI's Uniform Crime Reposting requirements and various Nevada Revised Statute.

The current and historical reports are published on the divisions public website at this link Crime in Nevada Annual Report. The UCR program forwards the state's crime statistics to the FBI for inclusion in its national reports.
National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS)
The state’s data is currently reported to the FBI
using the Summary Reporting System (SRS) methodology. The law enforcement
community called for a thorough study of UCR with the objective of recommending
an expanded and enhanced program to meet future law enforcement needs.
Following a multiyear study, a "Blueprint for the Future of the Uniform
Crime Reporting Program" was developed. New guidelines for UCR were
formulated using this “Blueprint" and collaborating with local and state law
enforcement executives.
Beginning January 1, 2021, the FBI UCR Program will
move to an electronic-only National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS)
methodology. NIBRS is being implemented to meet these new UCR guidelines. Due
to the new requirements, all agencies in the state must transition from
submitting crime statistics to the state via SRS methodology to using the NIBRS
methodology. NIBRS provides a more detailed level of information for crime
statistics than what is gathered in Nevada today.
The vision for NIBRS
is for it to become the law enforcement community’s standard for quantifying
crime, further supporting the mission for the FBI UCR Program to generate
reliable information to optimize management, training, planning, and research.
